<description>This project was initiated with the intention of transforming a web browsing experience into a typographical journey, revealing its nature as a global, multicultural media and amplifying personal messages with a manifesto-like quality. It is a typographical journey that goes through Facebook posts, and reacts to a sound that I recorded at multiple transit locations, in this case, a Japanese train station. Utilizing a Processing sketch that generates hex code from images and a simple algorithm in Nodebox, I created a system that generates texts with Facebook page’s hex code colors where I was able to feed Facebook posts. The process of creating multiple typographical posts was recorded and fast forwarded to create a sense of a fast paced journey. Instantaneous nature of social media was shown by literally grabbing texts from Facebook posts, and feeding them into the system, and by making the typeset “breathing” with the field recording. Dot elements within the type design were triggered by the sound recording, making the type design alive.

<description>"Technology-Infused Tradition - Mesh Type" is a personally initiated project that explores typographic development through creative computations.
The original idea is to enhance old tradition of typographic practice through new technology, and further investigate the possibility of combining the old and new, hand craftsmanship and the digital technique.

In the first place inspired by old hand engraving typesets and algorithmic patterns from various cultures, I was examining a way to infuse futuristic elements to the general concept of "Tradition" - not specifically pinpointing any cultures. However by putting the digital file back to the analogue world in a way that it attempts to have the authentic aura, I am criticizing my own creation while I am enjoying the fake realness, which then can be translated into a larger context, current digital media landscape with digital revolution. As I am attempting to use this typography as a means of critiquing current media landscape, it becomes more of a 'digital mash' type that speaks about the mashup culture and the loss of real traditional value - such as hand craftsmanship.
As soon as you try to grasp the realness in the mimicry of digital world, it disappears, and traditional value is no longer there.

Typeset developed using Nodebox 3, Analogue print by using silkscreen, thermochromic ink, resistive heaters, and arduino.

		<description>
To further investigate how artists are closely interrelated each other in different disciplines nowadays in this media landscape, I gave myself a mission to do a data visualization on Faculty Biennial 2013, which took place at the RISD museum. The show was a perfect micro version of the real world of visual arts, since 22 different kinds of departments at RISD were composing enough variety in the collection of the show.

First of all, I visited the exhibition several times to fully engage with the environment and the works, and to learn how people were reacting to the show. I found some works more interesting than some others, so I spent enough time on enjoying those that attracted me a lot, but then I started to look at how the exhibtion was curated and composed. Obviously the show was completely mixed and arranged in a way that no one could notice any particular way of organization or hierarchy of the works. Starting with two illustration department faculty members’ works utilizing digital print on mylar and graphite on gesso board, to the last printmaking work etching cast on plaster, the show was completely blended with different departments and media. By the nature of the show, given the fact that faculty members from all the major were participating, it was a good starting point to visualize the connections and relationships between each discipline in terms of using materials and even employing the same theme.

This piece started as an investigation of interrelationship between disciplines, but ended up as an exploration of nature of data, and connection between representations of art works by artists and the works themselves.

The Mind Behind Pages
Di Tang, Derek Fukumori and Sang Un Jeon

Performers: Christina Metaxa, Madeleine O'neill

Writing by Di Tang
Modern lives are saturated by the Internet, and the content and structure of the
Internet are becoming increasingly woven into our individual psychologies.

This piece examines the feedback loop created by this bilateral influence. Using
two canonical psychological tests -- the Rorschach inkblot test and word
association -- in conjunction with dancers and laptops, we create a system in
which the perceived meaning of text and image is transferred cyclically between
human consciousness and Web consciousness in a visually-rich performative
environment.
People consume information primarily from search engines and online media
outlets, all of which share the same primary job -- to condense, filter and
prioritize. Among the Internet’s immeasurably large sea of data, these entities
turn relevance into a commodity. But the relevance of content is not inherent.
Rather, the Web consciousness -- i.e. the system by which the Internet attaches
value to information -- is shaped by our cultural context and collective values.
Thus, we as individuals are not only shaped by the Internet, but are also actively
involved in defining and refining Web consciousness. A feedback loop arises, in
which the meanings of words, images and events are transferred cyclically
between human and Web consciousness. Meaning changes with shifts in cultural
context and individual psychology, and these shifts are absorbed into the cycle,
introducing changes, granular or dramatic in scale, into the Web consciousness.
The piece seeks to examine this feedback loop.
To represent the transference of meaning, the two well-established psychological
tests -- the Rorschach inkblot test and word association, which used to be
applied to test human, is now applied to test the Web.
In the piece, two performers stand center stage, an infrared camera captures the
silhouettes of the performers, and feeds the image into Max, which manipulates
the image into an abstract “Rorschach image”, which is projected behind the
performers. An invited audience will be the interpreter to say 2 or 3 keywords out
loud based on his/her first reaction to that image. Those words are then fed by 3
testers into the search engine of four different mainstream websites (New York
Times, Google Images, Youtube, CNN). The screens of the computers
performing these searches will be projected into the performance space, and the
audience will be able to see the search process and results. The performers will
assume a physical posture that corresponds to the search results, based on their
first, direct bodily reaction to the search results. The physical postures are
interpretive, and are the embodiment of the Web contents. The infrared camera
will capture this change, and generate a new “Rorschach image” to restart the
cycle.
Audience will have chance to go through the whole psychological testing process
from human consciousness to the Web consciousness and make an interesting
comparison.

We are living in a world that is connected with real interaction with real people, but we spend ever more increasing amount of time on the Internet, creating this virtual world that deals with pretty much everything we do in real life. We constantly engage and interact with each other through this virtual space, and the current technology have gotten to the point where we can virtually navigate real life street and see what's out there without bothering to go out and actually see. Virtual City is a visualization of the current topography of this virtual world called the World Wide Web. Using Google Sketch-up Pro, Rhinoceros and 3d printing, virtualized real-life buildings were re-realized, combined with the initials of the most well established communities on the Internet. The heights of the individual buildings reflect on the estimated unique monthly visitors of the web site that was combined with the building, thus creating an illustration of combined structures of virtual and real world. Each individual structure sits on top of a keyboard, where the interaction of the virtual and real world takes place.
Initials of the web sites referenced and buildings used came from the following;

This project was initiated with my personal feelings and perspectives about two cities that I have lived in: Providence where I live right now, and Seoul where I originally come from. I was interested in exploring unexpected hybridization, so it was a perfect subject matter to explore. In Providence, I feel empty and lonely, but at the same time I see the magnificence of western civilization and the beauty of limited palette of colors in the buildings and surroundings. In Seoul, I feel very lively and busy, but at the same time I see ugliness in the buildings and surroundings, especially in all the signs on the buildings. Conversely, I also see beauty in them, because they are full of life and full of stories. I see ugliness in the western buildings in Providence, because they are old and empty. This work is an exploration of hybridizing unexpected things, to initiate conversations regarding the social implications of the resulting look. This becomes a critique of our environment, both Providence and Seoul.

<description>This project was initiated with my personal desire to create sound and a piece of music triggered by my drawing. Using MAX/MSP/JITTER, I remixed color generated piano sounds with slowed-down version of Fourtet's "swimmer", ambient classical music and captured sound in times square in New York City. Figuring out the mapping was the hardest part and the final decision was as follows ; Dimension of color triggers background noise captured in Times Square. Amount of red triggers the ambient classical music. Amount of blue triggers the distortion of video and volume of piano sound. Position of drawing triggers the pitch of the piano sound.
